We are deeply saddened to hear that Sensei Naoki Murata has died. Sensei Murata, (the gentleman pictured on the far right,) will be much missed and will be remembered fondly by the Martial Arts community. He was so kind, welcoming and supportive, especially of The Budokwai's last trip to Japan in 2018.
Our thoughts and condolences are with his family and friends at this sad time.

Media interest in Kray membership letter

There has been a lot of interest in an article featured in The Times newspaper today (Saturday 28th March.) Whilst this is a wonderful nugget of historical evidence from 1948, we are reminded of the ethos of our sport and our Club, especially at this time, when we need to focus on well-being, patience, and control.

Kray letter article

In these challenging times, it is particularly useful to reflect on the holistic side to our Martial Arts practice.

As quoted in the article, Gunji Koizumi said, ‘the aim of martial training is to stop fighting.’ Developing your own well-being practice can really help with nurturing mind and body, and following the ethical principles of the Judo, and the Shotokan Karate Dojo Kun can be a valuable aid in staying focused.

Judo Moral Code:

Courtesy: Be polite to other people

Courage: face difficulty without fear

Fair play: be a good sport, play by the rules

Honour: Fairness in beliefs and actions

Modesty: Be without vanity or boastfulness.

Respect: Regard for others

Self- control: Control over yourself and actions.

Friendship: Be a good friend, be helpful and kind.

Hygiene: Wear a clean judogi. No shoes on the mat. Zoris worn off the mat.

Shotokan Karate Dojo Kun:

Seek perfection of character

Be faithful

Endeavour

Respect others.

Refrain from violent behaviour

(Please note that translations differ slightly, the essence of the message remains the same.)

Stay safe, stay well.

Honor Blackman dies

We are saddened to hear of the death of Honor Blackman, who trained in Judo at The Budokwai in the 1960s.
Ms Blackman returned to the club to film with our instructors for the BBC's, The One Show a few years ago.

UPDATE - Coronavirus (COVID-19) ADVICE

Dear Members,

The UK Government issued their advice on the Coronavirus (COVID-19) on 3rd March and further advice was issued via a televised press conference on 12th March.

The current advice from gov.uk is:

“The advice for anyone in any setting is to follow these main guidelines.

1.     The most common symptoms of coronavirus (COVID-19) are recent onset of a new continuous cough and/or high temperature. If you have these symptoms, however mild, stay at home and do not leave your house for 7 days from when your symptoms started. You do not need to call NHS 111 to go into self-isolation. If your symptoms worsen during home isolation or are no better after 7 days, contact NHS 111 online. If you have no internet access, you should call NHS 111. For a medical emergency dial 999.

2.     Wash your hands more often than usual, for 20 seconds using soap and hot water, particularly after coughing, sneezing and blowing your nose, or after being in public areas where other people are doing so. Use hand sanitiser if that’s all you have access to.

3.     To reduce the spread of germs when you cough or sneeze, cover your mouth and nose with a tissue, or your sleeve (not your hands) if you don’t have a tissue, and throw the tissue away immediately. Then wash your hands or use a hand sanitising gel.

4.     Clean and disinfect regularly touched objects and surfaces using your regular cleaning products to reduce the risk of passing the infection on to other people.”

The Budokwai is following the advice from the UK Government and the NHS.

The Budokwai request you note the following:

-        Mats and all floors are cleaned and disinfected by our professional cleaners at the close of business each day.

-        Hand sanitisers are located in both dojos and at the Reception desk.

-        Soap is located by the sinks in both bathrooms and in the Club Room. We request you wash your hands upon entering the Club, before your class, and after using the bathroom.

-        Toys and equipment are disinfected after each Budokwai Babies and Toddler class in the mornings.

-        We ask all members and guests to ensure they wear shoes to and from the dojo, and under no circumstances, can shoes be worn on the mats. This is part of the contract that was signed when becoming a member and must be adhered to.

-        Any tissues, bottled drinks / food packaging must be thrown away immediately after use.

-        All gis and exercise clothing must be clean, and long hair tied back.

-        Any coughs or sneezes must be directed into a tissue that must be discarded immediately or directed into the bend of your arm, not your hands.

-        Do not attend class if you feel unwell.

If you are concerned about your health or the health of someone you know, then consult your GP, Pharmacist, or dial the NHS on 111. If you have any queries or concerns please contact the Manager at The Budokwai.

The Budokwai is committed to the safety of its members and will continue to closely monitor the official advice.

With thanks from The Budokwai
