The Chairman, Peter Blewett at the Chelsea Embankment Memorial to Gunji Koizumi who died on this day 55 years ago.
The Chairman began Judo in the same month and year.
The memorial is under a cherry tree that was planted in his memory in Roper Gardens. It's on the north side of Cheyne Walk between Battersea and Chelsea Bridge. A cherry tree was chosen as it forms part of the design for the Budokwai logo. The logo features, "the character 'bu' on the background of a cherry blossom. Bu is composed of two characters, one meaning spear or fighting, the other meaning stop, indicating that the aim of martial training is to stop fighting."
We are deeply saddened to hear that Sensei Naoki Murata has died. Sensei Murata, (the gentleman pictured on the far right,) will be much missed and will be remembered fondly by the Martial Arts community. He was so kind, welcoming and supportive, especially of The Budokwai's last trip to Japan in 2018.
Our thoughts and condolences are with his family and friends at this sad time.
We hope you had a safe and happy Easter!
Hope you are all keeping safe and well.
This picture was from the last event attended by Budokwai members before the closures. A silver medal from Moberly Stars.

Congratulations to our young Judoka who won a gold and silver medal at the High Wycombe Red and Yellow competition a few months ago. Fantastic performances from both and most importantly they had great fun!

There has been a lot of interest in an article featured in The Times newspaper today (Saturday 28th March.) Whilst this is a wonderful nugget of historical evidence from 1948, we are reminded of the ethos of our sport and our Club, especially at this time, when we need to focus on well-being, patience, and control.
In these challenging times, it is particularly useful to reflect on the holistic side to our Martial Arts practice.
As quoted in the article, Gunji Koizumi said, ‘the aim of martial training is to stop fighting.’ Developing your own well-being practice can really help with nurturing mind and body, and following the ethical principles of the Judo, and the Shotokan Karate Dojo Kun can be a valuable aid in staying focused.
Judo Moral Code:
Courtesy: Be polite to other people
Courage: face difficulty without fear
Fair play: be a good sport, play by the rules
Honour: Fairness in beliefs and actions
Modesty: Be without vanity or boastfulness.
Respect: Regard for others
Self- control: Control over yourself and actions.
Friendship: Be a good friend, be helpful and kind.
Hygiene: Wear a clean judogi. No shoes on the mat. Zoris worn off the mat.
Shotokan Karate Dojo Kun:
Seek perfection of character
Be faithful
Endeavour
Respect others.
Refrain from violent behaviour
(Please note that translations differ slightly, the essence of the message remains the same.)
Stay safe, stay well.

We are saddened to hear of the death of Honor Blackman, who trained in Judo at The Budokwai in the 1960s.
Ms Blackman returned to the club to film with our instructors for the BBC's, The One Show a few years ago.

We hope you are all keeping safe and well during lockdown. Have any of you found any fabulous finds like we have?
Keep well, keep active and we shall see you in the dojo at some point soon. Oss!
