Europe's Oldest & Most Prestigious Judo and Martial Arts Club

The Budokwai began as a Judo club and still offers Judo classes throughout the week. We also offer regular martial arts classes in Shotokan Karate, Brazilian Jui-Jitsu and Aikido as well as Hontai Yoshin Ryu Ju-Jitsu and Pilates. Our martial arts instructors are all highly qualified, experienced and able to offer a range of coaching and instruction for the complete novice through to Olympic standard. Beginners are carefully taught techniques most suited to their ability and proceed up the grades towards the much-coveted Dan grade and Black Belt. The junior martial arts instructors are of the same high standard and the children's Judo classes & Karate classes attract a great number of youngsters every week.

  • Tonight's one-off Karate senior class with JKA HQ instructor is now full. 

    Normal timetable will resume from Thursday 28th. 

  • Sunday 1st May Cadet Class 

    We are looking forward to welcoming judoka from Core Judo Group this Sunday, to accommodate this exciting visit, the class will run from 11:15-13:30 

    We look forward to seeing you in the dojo.  


    Sensei David Mesa Rey, former Cuban National Judo Champion will run the 10 week introductory ABC in Judo course at The Budokwai, starting on April 26th.

  • 98 Years of Training at The Budokwai

    image_copy3On January 26th 2016, The Budokwai celebrated it's 98th year!


    The club was first opened by Gunji Koizumi on Saturday 26th January 1918!


    We continue to celebrate our history and look forward to a wonderful future! Ouss!



    There are still some places left in a select number of Budokwai Babies & Toddlers JudoGym and Art classes and in the Mini and Midi Judo classes for the Summer term which runs from 11th April - 15th July.

    New members should contact the club for a FREE trial class. Contact the Reception to secure a place.

  • Ray Stevens awarded 7th Dan

    On the 3rd March, Neil Adams MBE guest taught at The Budokwai visiting the Junior and Senior classes.  He was delighted to present our Judo and BJJ instructor Ray Stevens with his 7th Dan! Congratulations Ray, and come back and visit the dojo again soon Neil! 


  • Adult Beginner Course in Judo

    The Budokwai runs regular BJA approved 10 week ABC courses with Sensei David Mesa Rey. The current course began on Saturday 19th January. 


    Tuesdays 18:30 - 19:30 


    The next course begins on April 26th, book your place by emailing / calling the Reception.

  • Tonan Bootcamp

    Friday 29th April at 18:30 - ONE SPACE LEFT
    Friday 6th May at 18:30 - FULL
    Sunday 8th May at 12:30 - Some spaces left 

    Please book at to secure your place. 

  • Please note The Budokwai will be closed to all classes on Monday 2nd May due to the Bank Holiday. 

    Classes will run as normal on Saturday, the Sunday cadet class will run from 11:15-13:30.

    We are excited to announce that Sensei Steve Fraser, seen here with Olympian Brian Jacks will be running a theory class to prepare judoka from 5th Kyu up to 5th Dan for the grading.
